Non-Toxic Vegan Nail Polish

Since getting pregnant I’ve been avoiding wearing nail polish (amongst other things!) - they’re so full of nasties, I avoid wearing any at the best of times, so when growing a precious little soul I just made the decision not to wear any (especially in the fragile first trimester)

After some research, I know there are now quite a few brands of “non-toxic” varnish, which would/should be safer for pregnancy - take the “non-toxic” term with a pinch of salt, I don’t believe any nail polish can be 100% clean, it can just be cleaner… I am not planning to wear nail polish all of the time, but for special occasions and Christmas coming up, it would be fun!

So I asked you guys on Instagram yesterday, and this is the list of brands that came highly recommended. I thought I’d compile them in an easily clickable post you can refer to later - these days I find things just get lost on Stories on Instagram and get lost in the highlights too (why don’t they have a better system to organise the highlights?!) So here’s a mini-post with a list of all the recommendations you guys made, all of them are vegan and cruelty-free, but the non-toxicity factor varies from brand to brand.

I won’t go into great details as to what and how nail polish is toxic, just look at the list of ingredients and do a bit of research, it’s scary..! (this method goes with anything you put on and in your body, over the years I have cleaned up my beauty regimen as well as all other products I use around the house etc. If this is not something you have looked into, I highly recommend paying attention to ingredients!)

Amongst other things that are worrying, most regular nail polishes contain endocrine-disrupting chemicals, as well as carcinogens too.. NOT something you want at any stage of your life.

Some are “6 free” or “10free” etc.. of course you want to aim for a brand that has the most nasties out, but I thought I’d break down what these labels mean below. Anyone who offers above 10 free is golden in my opinion, plus points for any formulas that are ‘water-based’ or ‘plant-based’ to make them breathable.

3-free: dispenses with formaldehyde, toluene and dibutyl phthalate.5-free: additionally dispenses with formaldehyde resin and camphor.7-free: additionally renounces animal ingredients and animal testing.10-free: additionally dispenses with parabens, fragrances and xylenes.

Let’s get down to it! A few you’ll see I’ve noted are only US/Canada based only, and couldn’t find them in the UK. (any marked with an asterisk * is an affiliate link)

Now if you want to skip the polish altogether and stay ‘au naturel’, I’ve just discovered this brilliant brand - a 2 step high gloss natural nail routine. My kind of nail!
